Man grows nails for 15 years

A Chinese man has let his fingernails on one hand grow for 15 years.

Li Jianping, 43, of Shishi City, Fujian province, says the nails on his left hand are one metre long in total.

He told the Straits City News he was very proud of them but admitted they could be an inconvenience at times.

“I never go to crowded places. And during sleep, I have to keep my left wrist under my head to prevent the hand from moving,” says Li, who owns a grocery store.

The current length took 15 years to achieve, but he first started to grow them 23 years ago.

“When I was 20, I read a news report saying an Indian man had let the fingernails on his left hand grow to around one meter. Then I made up my mind to surpass him," he said.

“Before 1992, my nails were broken twice in accidents: once when I was moving things, the second time by a friend. Each time I had to start over.”

Surgery of a snake

A nine-year-old girl has become a TV chef in China.

Shi Yulan, from Shanghai, is now writing her own recipe book, reports Qianjiang Evening News.

Shi has been working in the kitchen at home for almost as long as she has been able to walk.

She said: "At two-years-old, I already helped my mom by washing bowls in the kitchen and I started to cook for the family for fun from the age of six."

Shi hosts a cooking show for a local TV station and in her spare time she is writing a book recalling her cooking experiences and many of her cooking recipes.

"I am doing the actual cooking job and my mom is beside me shooting the whole process since we want readers to get a clear picture of how to make these dishes besides the text," she said.

World’s Smallest Baby

Meet Amillia Taylor - or what she looked like in October, when she was born as the world's youngest surviving premature baby. Amillia was born at a Miami hospital after less than 22 weeks of development. Since then she's been incubating and is expected to go home soon.

Is there nothing more amazing than those teeny tiny translucent feet. Hold your own hand out in front of you, and imagine those feet poking through your fingers. She was 10 OUNCES when born (280 grams), and 9.5 inches (240 cm). That's just longer than the length of your hand.

Name: Budhia Singh. Age: 3 years. Achievement: Can run close to 60 km in six-and-a-half hours.

This tot was much in the news in 2005 - on the television, in the newspapers - for his astounding marathon run and his capacity to go on and on. His coach, Biranchi Das, has dreams of getting his protege's name entered into the Guinness Book of World Record and has put little Budhia on a strict diet and a schedule according to which a few kilometres are added to his marathon practice each day.

But fears abound? Can the frail little body withstand the gruelling regimen? Is his mentor being overambitious, and driving the child so hard only to gather name and fame for himself? According to champion athlete PT Usha running around 50 km so frequently could adversely affect Budhia's health, in the long run.

Orissa's sports minister Debashis Nayak has tried to address these concerns. He says the state is keeping a close watch and will not let the child be exploited. Budhia's coach Das has also assured that regular medical check ups are carried out to ascertain that Budhia's health does not suffer.

And who is Budhia? Budhia is from Bhubaneswar. In 2004, he was sold to a man for Rs 800/- because his mother, who washes dishes, was unable to provide for four children, after the death of their father in the same year.

It proved to be a turning point for Budhia. His talent was discovered in the guise of a punishment meted out to him by the president of the residents' association and judo coach, Biranchi Das. Das had ordered the mischievous kid to keep running till he returned. To his astonishment, when he returned after around four hours, Budhia was still running, and showed little signs of exhaustion. Das took him under his tutelage.

Since then little Budhia has not looked back...
